Coming off of a series win over the Rays, the Cleveland Guardians (52-49) will head back home to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks (45-56) in a three-game series. The first game of the series will be played Monday at Progressive Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

The Diamondbacks come into this one having been swept by the Atlanta Braves, including a 1-0 loss in Sunday’s finale.

Offensively, Arizona managed just four hits, including two by left fielder Jake McCarthy. The Diamondbacks also managed four walks, but they couldn’t push any runs across in the shutout.

Cleveland has more success over the weekend taking two of three on the road from the Rays. In Sunday’s contest, they won the game and the series with a 5-3 victory.

The Guardians managed nine hits in the win including two by center fielder Myles Straw. He and Austin Hedges both had two runs batted in each despite batting at the bottom of the order.

August 1 Guardians Betting Odds

The Guardians are the favorites in Monday’s contest. They are -156 to win while the Diamondbacks’ moneyline sits at +132. The runline features Arizona +1.5 (-162), and the over/under for total runs is 8.5.

Pitching Matchup

Returning from the injured list, the Diamondbacks will send righty Zach Davies to the mound Monday. It has been over a month since he has pitched in the majors, but this season he is 2-4 with a 3.94 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and has 62 strikeouts in 80 innings.

Cleveland will counter with righty Cal Quantrill. In 19 games, he is 7-5 with a 3.97 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and has 71 strikeouts in 111 innings. He was hit hard in his last start, giving up five runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings, but he will look to bounce back Monday.

Arizona Throwing In The Towel

At 45-56, the Arizona Diamondbacks sit dead last in the NL West, a whopping 23 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. With the postseason out of the question, they have already thrown in the towel, trading away outfielder David Peralta, with other trade possibilities still being discussed prior to Tuesday’s deadline.

Still, while they may not be competing for a spot themselves, they would still love to play spoiler for some potential playoff hopefuls. It will be interesting to see how Davies returns after missing more than a month with shoulder inflammation. Given that he isn’t fully stretched out, the expectation is that Davies will be limited to about 50-60 pitches.

Offensively, Christian Walker has led the team in most offensive stats. Despite hitting just .200/.306/.437, Walker leads the team in home runs (23), runs batted in (52) and is tied for second in runs scored (45).

Guardians Look To Keep Pressure On Twins

With Cleveland’s win Sunday and Minnesota’s loss, the Guardians have moved back to within a game of the Twins for first in the AL Central. Trying to keep the pressure on, the Guardians will look to take advantage of a soft spot in their schedule as they host Arizona.

A handful of Guardians’ players have had at bats against Davies with Amed Rosario having the most success. In 10 at bats versus the righty, Rosario has seven hits and a run batted in. Franmil Reyes has also had success against him going three for four.

Overall, Jose Ramirez continues to be the heart of the Guardians’ offense. He is hitting .288/.361/.570 with a team-leading 21 home runs, 84 runs batted in, 59 runs, and 14 stolen bases to date.

Guardians In Good Position To Take Monday’s Game

While the Cleveland Guardians have a tough end of the week as they host the Houston Astros, they should be able to find success with a struggling Arizona Diamondbacks team.

While Arizona has won six of its last 10 games, they have really struggled on the road this season. They are 27-27 at home this year, but they are only 18-29 on the road.

For Cleveland, they are 6-2 in their last eight home games, and they are 5-1 in their last six interleague games.

Obviously, Cal Quantrill will still need to be sharp as Arizona does have a couple of players that can make a pitcher pay, but this is a great opportunity for Cleveland to start the week off with a win.
