Workers prepare the 18th hole at the Wilmington Country Club for the BMW Championship

The FedEx Cup Playoffs moves to the second week and the Northeast for the BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware. This week marks the first time the PGA Tour has made a stop in the state of Delaware. The field of 70 players begins play on Thursday, August 18th and the individual stroke play event concludes on Sunday, August 21st.

With the field size reduce to the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings following last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, there will be no cut after the first two days of play. The top 30 players advance to next week’s Tour Championship, the final event of the 2021-22 PGA Tour season.

The prize pool remains $15 million, with the winner receiving a $2.7 million share. The winning golfer also receives an elevated 2,000 FedEx Cup points, 1,500 more than a standard Tour event.

Patrick Cantlay is the defending champion after defeating Bryson DeChambeau in a playoff last year. Cantlay and DeChambeau’s 27-under par was a tournament record. The BMW Championship was held at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland.

The Field

The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings tee it up this week with their eyes set on the generous prize and a trip to Atlanta next week. Cameron Smith and Tommy Fleetwood won’t be in action due to injuries, reducing the field to 68 players.

In action this week includes world no. 1 and current FedEx Cup leader Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler aims to rebound at Wilmington Country Club after missing the cut last week in Memphis. Also looking to get back into form is Rory McIlroy, who also failed to make it to the weekend last week.

Cantlay, last year’s winner, is back to defend his title. Sam Burns and Xander Schauffele, three-time winners on Tour this season, look to add that fourth victory to their resume this year.

Past FedEx Cup champions Billy Horschel (2014), Jordan Spieth (2015), and Justin Thomas (2017) join McIlroy and Cantlay as past champions in the field.

Wilmington Country Club

The Wilmington Country Club (South Course) is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design and opened its doors in 1959. The layout runs just over 7,500 yards and plays as a par-71. Alterations to the course have happened since, most notably in 2020, after a tornado ripped through the area, causing extensive damage to hundreds of the native trees on the property.

The course routing will be altered for tournament play, with the front nine consisting of holes 10-13-14-15-5-6-7-8-9 and the back nine the remaining holes of 1-2-3-4-16-17-11-12-18. Players will want to find the fairways off the tee, with tall fescue making up the primary and secondary rough. The greens are Bermudagrass with bentgrass in the fairways.

Betting Favorites

Pre-tournament plays will be difficult this week with no course history to lean on. The BMW Championship has yielded a score of 20-under or better every year since 2016, so a focus on players that can attack with birdies is key. Below are the top betting favorites heading into Thursday’s action:

Rory McIlroy (+1000)

Xander Schauffele (+1400)

Will Zalatoris (+1400)

Tony Finau (+1400)

Scottie Scheffler (+1400)

Patrick Cantlay (+1400)

Matthew Fitzpatrick (+1400)

Justin Thomas (+1400)

Jon Rahm (+1400)
