Cleveland Guardians pitcher James Karinchak celebrates win vs. White Sox

The top two teams in the AL Central will face off in a makeup game Thursday as the Chicago White Sox (73-70) take on the Cleveland Guardians (76-65). The Guardians will host this one at Progressive Field with first pitch scheduled for 1:10 p.m.

Coming into this one, the White Sox split a two-game series with the Colorado Rockies, losing Wednesday’s finale 3-0. Dylan Cease took the loss after giving up three runs in five innings of work.

The Guardians had more success in their last series as they swept the Los Angeles Angels in a three-game series. Cleveland won Wednesday 5-3 behind Cal Quantrill, who allowed three runs in seven innings of work. Oscar Gonzalez and Jose Ramirez homered for the Guardians in the win.

The White Sox are the favorites Thursday despite playing on the road. They are (-154) to win while the Guardians moneyline sits at (+135). The runline features Cleveland +1.5 (-129), and the over/under for total runs is 7.5.

Pitching Matchup

The White Sox will turn to Lance Lynn in Thursday’s contest. In 17 games, the 35-year-old righty is 6-5 with a 4.07 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and he has 107 strikeouts in 97.1 innings.

The Guardians will counter with 24-year-old righty Hunter Gaddis. In his lone MLB start, he went just 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits.

Big Game For White Sox

At 73-70, the Chicago White Sox currently sit four games back of the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central. With 19 games left, Chicago desperately needs to win this game and cut their deficit if they hope to make the postseason.

For Chicago, the division is their best avenue to the playoffs as they sit 6.5 games behind the last Wild Card spot.

After an inconsistent start to the season, Lance Lynn has been phenomenal as of late. He is 3-0 in his last three starts, and in that span, he has allowed just one earned run over a combined 20 innings of work.

Offensively, Elvis Andrus has given the White Sox a spark since being picked up. In the last two weeks, he has hit .356/.406/.678 with a team-leading five home runs, 16 runs batted in, and 12 runs scored.

Cleveland Looks To Stay Hot

After sweeping the Angels to start the week, the Cleveland Guardians have now won six straight games. With their next nine against the White Sox and the Twins, Cleveland is hoping to stay hot and put the division out of reach.

Keep an eye on Jose Ramirez on Thursday. In 26 career at bats versus Lance Lynn, he is hitting .385 with four home runs and eight runs batted in.

For the entire season, Ramirez is hitting .282/.356/.531 with a team-leading 27 home runs, 111 runs batted in, and 79 runs scored. He is also tied for second in stolen bases on the team with 15.

Andres Gimenez has also had success against Lynn as he is hitting .333 in 12 at bats with a home run.

Great Opportunity For Hunter Gaddis

Hunter Gaddis’ one and only career start was an absolute nightmare in early August as he was demolished by the Houston Astros. On Thursday, he has an opportunity to not only redeem himself, but to create even more separation for his club in the race for the AL Central crown.

Both of these teams come in hot. The White Sox have won 10 of their last 14 games, while the Guardians have won six in a row.

At the end of the day, it will come down to the pitching. Lance Lynn has been one of the best pitchers in the American League over his last few starts.

It is tough to envision Gaddis going toe to toe with Lynn, but if he can at least limit the damage, the Guardians might have a chance to squeak this one out. It won’t be easy for the Guardians, but with the way they have been playing lately, you never know.
