Cleveland Guardians vs. Chicago White Sox September 20 Betting Preview

With just 15 games remaining this season, the Cleveland Guardians (80-67) will start a pivotal series Tuesday as they take on the Chicago White Sox (76-71). The White Sox will host this one at Guaranteed Rate Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 8:10 p.m.

Coming into play, the Guardians just took four of five from the Minnesota Twins, including an 11-4 win on Monday. In the win, Cal Quantrill allowed three runs in 5.1 innings. Offensively, the team hit three home runs, including Josh Naylor’s 18th.

After taking two of three from the Detroit Tigers, the White Sox enjoyed a day off on Monday. In their last game, they beat Detroit 11-5 behind three home runs, including a grand slam from Andrew Vaughn.

The White Sox are the favorites Tuesday, playing at home. They are (-167) to win, while the Guardians’ moneyline sits at (+145). The over/under for total runs is 7.5.

Guardians Try To Stay Hot In Defining Series

At 80-67, the Cleveland Guardians hold a four-game lead in the AL Central over the White Sox with just 15 games to play. With that in mind, a series win here could all but seal the deal on a division win. Having won eight of their last 10, the Guardians come in red hot in this one.

On the mound for the Guardians will be righty Aaron Civale. He is 2-6 in 16 games this season with a 5.40 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and he has 75 strikeouts in 75 innings.

Civale will be making his first start since August 28, when he allowed four runs in 6.1 innings to the Seattle Mariners.

Offensively, All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez continues to be the team’s best hitter. In 545 at-bats, he is hitting .279/.357/.525 with a team-leading 28 home runs, 113 runs batted in, and 82 runs scored. He is also second on the team with 17 stolen bases.

White Sox Look To Cy Young Candidate For Series Opener

The White Sox have a golden opportunity to cut the deficit in the division, and they will look to ace Dylan Cease to pick up the win in the opener. This season, Cease is 14-7 in 29 starts with a 2.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and he has 214 strikeouts in 167 innings.

Cease’s numbers have been so good that he currently has the second-best odds of winning the AL Cy Young at (+420). Cease did pick up a loss in his last start after allowing three runs in five innings to the Colorado Rockies.

At the plate, Andrew Vaughn has quietly been one of the White Sox best hitters this year. He is hitting .288/.339/.461 with a team-leading 17 home runs and 73 runs batted in.

Also, keep an eye on Eloy Jimenez in this one. In 11 career at bats versus Civale, he is hitting .455 with two home runs and three runs batted in.  

Cleveland Has Golden Opportunity, But It Won’t Be Easy

The Guardians come in with a golden opportunity to really put the AL Central away, but Tuesday’s game won’t be easy as they square off against Cease.

Still, Cleveland has won 10 of their last 12, and they are 5-1 in their last six games. Unfortunately, against the White Sox, they are 1-4 in their last five games.

Cease showed that he is human in his last start against the Rockies. If the Guardians can find a way to put pressure on him, and Aaron Civale can limit the damage by Chicago’s offense, the Guardians have an opportunity to steal the opener Tuesday.
