Guardians starting pitcher Zach Plesac delivers a pitch

After taking the first two games of the series, the Cleveland Guardians (57-52) will look to finish the sweep as they take on the Detroit Tigers (43-68). The Tigers will host Thursday’s contest at Comerica Park with first pitch scheduled for 1:10 p.m.

Cleveland took Wednesday’s game 3-2 to secure a series win. In the victory, Aaron Civale went four innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four. Bryan Shaw picked up the win in relief while Emmanuel Clase picked up his 26th save of the season.

Offensively, Steven Kwan and Andres Gimenez combined for four of the Tigers’ eight hits on the day.

Like the Guardians, the Tigers had eight hits with Riley Greene, Harold Castro, and Akil Baddoo accounting for six of those hits.

Pitching Matchup

Zach Plesac will try to get back into the win column in the finale. In 20 games, he is 2-10 with a 4.49 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and has 83 strikeouts in 108.1 innings. Plesac has lost three straight games and has not picked up a win since June 5.

The Tigers will counter with 26-year-old righty Garrett Hill. In six games, he is 2-3 with a 5.12 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and has 17 strikeouts in 31.2 innings. Hill did pick up a win in his last start against the Rays, allowing just one run on six hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Guardians Look To Stay Hot

Having won seven of their last 10 games, the Cleveland Guardians have moved into the lead in the AL Central on the backs of their hot stretch. They will look to keep it going on Thursday and try to finish the sweep against the Tigers.

The Guardians’ lineup has seen Garrett Hill once, with Steven Kwan and Josh Naylor accounting for their only hits. For Naylor, his hit was a solo home run off the righty.

The best hitter for the Guardians this season has been All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez. In 406 at bats, he is hitting .283/.354/.547 with a team-leading 21 home runs, 88 runs batted in, 61 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases.

Change Coming To The Tigers

The loss to Cleveland was not the biggest news to hit the Tigers on Wednesday. The team announced that they have let general manager and executive vice president Al Avila go. With the team looking for its next general manager in the front office, the team on the field will try to salvage the finale against the Guardians.

Keep an eye on Riley Greene in this one. Albeit in just five at bats, he has two hits including a home run and three runs batted in against Plesac. Eric Haase has also homered off of the righty while Willi Castro is hitting .467 in 15 at bats against him.

Still, the Tigers continue to struggle offensively. They rank dead last in the majors in scoring, averaging just 3.21 runs per game. At home, they are slightly better averaging 3.70 runs.

Plesac Needs To Find A Way To Win

For a team that is trying to contend for a postseason spot, the Cleveland Guardians can’t afford to take a loss every fifth day. As such, Zach Plesac needs to find a way to get a victory for his club on Thursday.

Looking at the trends, the Guardians are undefeated in their last five games against the Tigers while they are 6-2 in their last eight road games.

If Plesac can limit the damage, the Guardians’ bats should hopefully be able to take care of the rest. As Cleveland gets ready to cross the border to take on the Blue Jays this weekend, leaving Detroit with a sweep would make for a happy flight.
