Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop slides safe into home plate against Guardians catcher Sandy Leon

As they try to fight for the AL Central crown, Monday's results are certainly not what the Cleveland Guardians (40-38) were hoping for as they dropped two to the Detroit Tigers (32-47).

On Tuesday, they will look to get back on track as they play the Tigers for the third time in their four-game series. The Tigers will host this one at Comerica Park, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Tigers won 4-1. Jonathan Schoop went four for four for the Tigers with two runs. For Cleveland, Josh Naylor accounted for the only offense as he hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.

The second game Monday saw the Tigers win 5-3. Tyler Alexander picked up the win in relief after going 3.1 scoreless innings. Eric Haase hit his sixth home run of the season in the win for Detroit.

Konnor Pilkington started this one for the Guardians, giving up three runs (one earned) in four innings of work. The Guardians' offense managed just six hits in the game and left 11 stranded on base.

Pitching Matchup

Trying to pick up the first win of the series, the Guardians will send righty Cal Quantrill to the mound. In 14 games this season, he is 4-4 with a 3.72 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and has 51 strikeouts in 84.2 innings.

Quantrill has taken no-decision in his last two starts, giving up a combined five earned runs in the past 13 innings of work.

For the Tigers, they will counter with righty Drew Hutchison. In 12 games, Hutchison is 0-4 with a 4.81 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and has 17 strikeouts in 24.1 innings.

Guardians Need To Halt Slide

Having gone 4-6 in their last ten games, the Cleveland Guardians find themselves 3.5 games behind the first-place Twins. Trying to stop that slide, the Guardians need to pick up a win Tuesday on the road, where they are 20-21 this season.

Keep an eye on third baseman Jose Ramirez in this one. Not only does he have the best offensive numbers on the team overall, but he has hit Hutchison well in his career, too. In six at bats, he has three hits with a home run and four runs batted in.

Over the last week, Josh Naylor has been the best hitter for Cleveland. In that span, he has hit .261/.280/.652 with three home runs and five runs batted in.

Tigers Look For Series Win At Home

While it has been a tough season for the Tigers overall, they have been playing better as of late, winning six of their last 10. On Tuesday, they will try to secure a series win over the Guardians at home, where they are 21-24 this season.

Miguel Cabrera is three for six in his career against Cal Quantrill, but overall, the Tigers have not hit the righty overly well. They have no home runs off of him and collectively have gone just 9 for 43.

Speaking of Cabrera, this season, the 39-year-old designated hitter is hitting .300/.338/.364 with three home runs, 27 runs batted in, and 16 runs scored in 247 at bats. He is tied for the lead in runs batted in with Javier Baez.

Guardians Need Next Two Games

Especially playing a weaker team like the Tigers, the Guardians need every win they can get as they try to compete in the AL Central. After a miserable day on Monday where they dropped two games, Cleveland really needs to bounce back over the next two days.

It all starts with the pitching, and Cal Quantrill definitely has the ability to shutdown a Tigers' offense that has struggled to score this year.

Conversely, the Guardians' offense needs to ease some of the pressure by putting up a crooked number of their own.

With the way they played Monday, nothing is a guarantee, but the Guardians should be set up to take Tuesday's game at Detroit.
