Cleveland Guardians Oscar Gonzalez celebrates after hitting home run vs. Twins

After taking the first game of the series on Friday, the Cleveland Guardians (71-65) will look to secure a series win on Saturday as they take on the Minnesota Twins (69-68). The Twins will host this one at Target Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

The Guardians were able to take Friday’s opener 7-6. In the win, Cal Quantrill went five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on nine hits. He also struck out seven. Closer Emmanuel Clase came in and delivered the save.

Offensively, the team put up four in the first inning and never trailed in the game. Oscar Gonzalez hit two home runs while Austin Hedges hit his seventh of the season.

For the Twins, Dylan Bundy struggled as he allowed seven runs on 12 hits in just 4.2 innings. The bullpen didn’t allow a run in relief, but the damage had already been done.

Carlos Correa had a big night going four for five with a home run, four runs batted in, and two runs scored. Gio Urshela and Jose Miranda added three hits apiece in the loss.

The Guardians are the favorites Saturday despite playing on the road. They are (-121) to win, while the Twins’ moneyline sits at (+107). The runline features Minnesota +1.5 (-173), and the over/under for total runs is 7.5.

Pitching Matchup

Triston McKenzie will take the ball for manager Terry Francona on Saturday. In 26 games, he is 9-1 with a 3.18 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and he has 154 strikeouts in 158.1 innings.

The Twins will counter with righty Chris Archer. He is 2-7 in 24 games this season. He also sports a 4.47 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and he has 83 strikeouts in 100.2 innings.

Guardians Look To Keep Adding Wins

With just 26 games left in the season, the Guardians are clinging on to a 1.5-game lead in the division over the Chicago White Sox and a 2.5-game lead over the Twins. With every game magnified at this point, Cleveland will look to secure a series win by taking down the Twins on Saturday.

McKenzie will be looking for his first win since August 19, when he took down the White Sox. Since then, he has allowed seven earned runs in his last 16.2 innings. He will look to get back on track, and back in the win column, in the second game of this series.

Offensively, keep an eye on All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez. In 14 career at-bats versus Chris Archer, he is hitting .429 with a home run and two runs batted in.

Twins Trying To Avoid Further Slip

With their loss on Friday, the Twins now move to third in the AL Central, trailing both the Guardians and the White Sox. With several games left against both, the Twins have the ability to get back into this race, but need to start adding wins quickly.

They have struggled as of late, going just 3-7 in their last 10 games. Still, they have played relatively well at Target Field this year (40-30) and will look to use their home-field advantage in this one.

Gio Urshela and Carlos Correa have both had success against Triston McKenzie in their careers. Combined, they are 8 for 18 with four home runs and six runs batted in. Nick Gordon, Max Kepler, and Gary Sanchez have also gone deep against the righty.

Guardians Looking For Series Win On Saturday

With 11 of their next 14 games against either the Twins or the White Sox, this would be a great time for Cleveland to get hot. Especially down a couple of starters as they recover from injuries, the Guardians are really trying to lean on some of their star pitchers like Triston McKenzie.

While McKenzie has been sensational throughout the season, he has struggled a bit as of late. If he can regain form, the Guardians should be able to put some runs on the board against Archer and hopefully take the first two games of this series.
