AL Central foes will battle it out in a doubleheader Monday as the Detroit Tigers (43-73) take on the Cleveland Guardians (61-53). The Guardians will host these games at Progressive Field with the first game starting at 3:10 p.m., and the second game set to start at approximately 7:10 p.m.

The Tigers struggled in their last series getting swept by the Chicago White Sox in a three-game series. In Sunday’s finale, they lost 5-3.

Tigers’ starter Tyler Alexander took the loss Sunday after giving up three runs in five innings. Offensively, Harold Castro hit his fifth home run of the season while Javier Baez went two for four.

Cleveland was able to finish a series win on Sunday taking the rubber match with the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2. Shane Bieber allowed just two runs over seven innings while striking out six.

Amed Rosario led the way for Cleveland’s offense going three for four with a home run, two runs batted in, and three runs scored. Josh Naylor, Owen Miller, and Austin Hedges had two hits apiece in the victory.

August 15 Doubleheader Odds

The Guardians are the favorites in the first game. They are -217 to win while the Tigers’ moneyline is set at +160. The runline features Detroit +1.5 (-139), and the over/under for total runs is eight.

Even without a starting pitcher listed for Game 2, the Guardians (-200) are betting favorites. The over/under for total runs is 8.5.

Pitching Matchup

In the afternoon game, the Tigers will send righty Drew Hutchison (1-6, 4.45 ERA, 38 K) to the mound for the opener. The Guardians will counter with righty Aaron Civale (2-5, 6.05 ERA, 56 K).

Manager A.J. Hinch will hand the ball to righty Garrett Hill (2-3, 4.66 ERA, 18 K) for the nightcap. As previously mentioned the Guardians have not announced their starter for this game.

Tigers Trying To Snap Losing Streak

The Tigers are not playing great baseball right now. After getting swept by the White Sox over the weekend, they have lost seven straight games and nine of their last 10. Sitting dead last in the AL Central, the Tigers are 19 games behind the Guardians entering play Monday.

Detroit’s offense continues to disappoint this season. They currently sit last in the majors in scoring averaging just 3.17 runs per game. They are even worse on the road, though, as they are averaging just 2.66 runs away from Comerica Park.

The leading power hitter for the Tigers has been shortstop Javier Baez. Despite hitting just .227/.268/.381, he leads the team with 11 home runs, 45 runs batted in, and 41 runs scored.

Cleveland Looks To Create More Separation

With a big series coming up with the White Sox later this week, the Guardians would love to take advantage of playing the last-place Tigers for four games to start the week. At 61-53, the Guardians lead the AL Central by 2.5 games over both the Twins and White Sox.

Jose Ramirez continues to be the Guardians’ best hitter. In 422 at bats, he is hitting .282/.353/.543 with 22 home runs, 93 runs batted in, 63 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases.

Ramirez has also hit well against Drew Hutchison in his career. In 14 at bats, he is hitting .429 with a home run and six runs batted in. Against Hill, both Josh Naylor and Steven Kwan have taken the righty deep.

Cleveland Needs To Aim For Two Wins

With Detroit in such a rut, this is a great time for the Guardians to pounce and add a couple tallies in the win column Monday.

Looking at the trends, Detroit is winless in their last seven overall, winless in their last six against the Guardians, and 1-7 in their last eight on the road.

Conversely, Cleveland has been one of the hottest teams as of late winning seven of their last eight and going 7-3 in their last 10 at home.

Obviously, the Guardians can’t just overlook Detroit, but this is a great opportunity for them to pick up some wins before taking on the resurgent Chicago White Sox later in the week.
