Guardians second baseman Andres Gimenez throws to first base over Twins designated hitter Gary Sanchez

On Wednesday, the Minnesota Twins (43-34) and Cleveland Guardians (37-34) will square off for the fourth of a five-game set. The Guardians will host this one at Progressive Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

On Tuesday, the teams split a doubleheader as the Guardians won the first game 3-2, and the Twins took the nightcap 6-0.

In the first game, Minnesota's bullpen let the win slip away as Emilio Pagan gave up two runs in the eighth inning to take the loss. Offensively, Carlos Correa hit his ninth home run of the season.

For the Guardians, Sam Hentges got the win in relief despite giving up a run in an inning of work. Not to be overlooked, Zach Plesac threw six scoreless innings in a no-decision, striking out seven. Offensively, Amed Rosario led the way with three hits and two runs batted in.

The second game was all Minnesota. The offense dominated. Minnesota hit three home runs including Byron Buxton’s 20th. Cleveland's offense was held to just five hits with Oscar Gonzalez delivering two of them.

Pitching Matchup

Dylan Bundy will take the ball for the Twins in Wednesday’s game. In 12 games, he is 4-4 with a 4.80 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and has 46 strikeouts in 60 innings of work.

The Guardians will counter with 27-year-old righty Cal Quantrill. In 13 games, he is 4-4 with a 3.76 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and has 48 strikeouts in 76.2 innings. He took a no-decision in his last start against the Red Sox after giving up two earned runs in five innings of work.

Minnesota Looks To Improve Road Record

At 43-34, the Twins have been pretty consistent all season long. In fact, they have been good regardless of the venue as they are 23-17 at Target Field and 20-17 on the road. On Wednesday, they will look to add another tally to their road win column.

Speaking of consistency, Luis Arraez just continues to deliver for Minnesota. In 241 at bats, he is hitting a superb .344/.426/.440 with four home runs, 27 runs batted in, and 42 runs scored.

Arraez has also hit well against Quantrill as he has a .308 average in 13 at bats. Aside from Arraez, both Max Kepler and Alex Kiriloff have taken the Guardians’ righty deep.

Guardians Still Have Opportunity To Win The Series

This was a series that Cleveland hoped to cut into their AL Central deficit. With two games left, they still have the opportunity to get that done. Down two games to one in the five-game series, the Guardians hope to take Wednesday’s game to give themselves a chance at a series win on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the Guardians acquired catcher Sandy Leon from the Reds, and it might have been just in time. Against Dylan Bundy, Leon is hitting .308 in 13 at bats with a home run and two runs batted in.

Aside from Leon, Franmil Reyes also has a home run in two at bats versus Bundy. The Guardians best hitter, Jose Ramirez, has largely struggled against the righty hitting just .182 in 11 at bats.

Cleveland Needs To Get Wednesday’s Game

While Cal Quantrill may not be a bonafide ace, he has certainly pitched better this season than Dylan Bundy. In that regard, the Guardians really need to pick up the win on Wednesday.

Aside from Arraez, no one on the Twins has hit Quantrill really well. In fact, aside from Arraez, the team is a combined 5 for 44 against the righty. If he can continue that trend in the fourth game of the series, the Guardians’ offense should be able to do enough to tie the series at two games apiece.
