Guardians catcher Luke Maile celebrates a walk off winner against the Oakland A's

The Cleveland Guardians (28-26) have a chance to secure a series win in their four-game series with the Oakland Athletics (20-40) on Saturday. The game will be played at Progressive Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:10 p.m.

In the second game of the series on Friday, Triston McKenzie was solid, allowing just two runs on five hits over six innings while striking out six. Anthony Gose picked up the win in relief as the Guardians rallied with three runs in the ninth innings.

Jose Ramirez had another big night for the Guardians as he went three for four with a home run and two doubles. Owen Miller and Luke Maile also had a run batted in each.

Both of the A’s home runs came in the first two innings as both Seth Brown and Sean Murphy hit solo home runs.

Pitching Matchup

Oakland will send righty Frankie Montas to the mound Saturday looking to pick up their first win in their last ten games. This season, he is 2-6 with a 3.06 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and has 78 strikeouts in 70.2 innings of work.

Cleveland will counter with righty Zach Plesac. In 10 games, he is 2-4 with a 4.72 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and has 41 strikeouts in 55.1 innings. He picked up a win in his last outing against the Orioles, going six innings, allowing two runs, and striking out eight.

A’s Look To Trade Chip To Stop Losing Streak

The last time that the A’s won was a 6-5 victory over the Rangers back on May 29. Since that time, they have lost ten straight victories heading into play Saturday. Trying to stop the bleeding, they will look to a pitcher that may not be on their team in a couple of months.

After trading away Matt Olson, Matt Chapman, and Sean Manaea, the A’s are expected to move righty Frankie Montas before the trade deadline passes in early August. In the meantime, they will hope he can pitch them to a victory Saturday.

Offensively, it is not surprising that Seth Brown and Sean Murphy homered on Friday, given they have been Oakland’s most productive players. Brown and Murphy both have a team-leading six home runs, with Brown adding 26 runs batted in and Murphy adding 24.

Guardians Look To Stay Hot

Cleveland has been red hot as of late, winning eight of their last ten games. They are now 15-9 when playing at Progressive Field and will look to keep the heat on as they host the A’s Saturday.

Jose Ramirez just continues to produce for Cleveland. After his ninth-inning home run Friday, he is now hitting .294/.394/.647 with 16 home runs, 56 runs batted in, 36 runs scored, and nine stolen bases. He has also had success against Montas, hitting .357 in 14 at bats with a home run.

Andres Gimenez has also had success against Montas, going two for four against him with a home run and four runs batted in.

Cleveland Trying To Secure Fourth-Straight Series Win

Cleveland has been doing exactly what they need to against struggling teams…winning. With a win on either Saturday or Sunday, they will have won four straight series. In a perfect world, they would love to take care of business Saturday and go for the sweep in the finale.

Saturday won’t be easy as Frankie Montas is arguably the A’s best starter. Given how much Paul Blackburn shut them down, they will hope that they can scratch out at least a few runs against Montas.

Not only will they be challenged at the plate, but they are hoping that Zach Plesac can also build off of his nice outing last time. If Plesac can minimize the damage, the Guardians should have a good chance at running Oakland’s losing streak to 11.
