Cleveland Guardians celebrate a victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards

After Monday’s opener was postponed due to rain, the Texas Rangers (25-28) and Cleveland Guardians (24-25) will square off Tuesday in a doubleheader. The first game will kick off at 3:10 p.m. at Progressive Field in Cleveland, OH.

The Rangers come into this one-third in the AL West, nine games behind the Astros and just a half-game behind the Los Angeles Angels for second place. In their last ten games, they have gone 5-5.

Having won six of their last 10, the Guardians sit in second place in the AL Central, 4.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins. This will look to keep chipping away at the AL Central deficit while trying to win their third series in a row.

Betting Odds

The Guardians are the favorites playing at home in the first game of the doubleheader. They are -135 to win while the Rangers’ moneyline sits at +113. The runline features Texas +1.5 (-180), and the over/under for total runs is nine.

Pitching Matchup

In the first game of the doubleheader, Jon Gray (1-2, 4.83 ERA) will take the mound for the Rangers. He will be opposed by the Guardians’ righty Cal Quantrill (2-3, 3.52 ERA).

In the second game, the Rangers will send lefty Taylor Hearn (3-4, 5.48 ERA) to the bump. The Guardians have not announced who will start the second game of the doubleheader for them.

By The Numbers

The Guardians hold the advantage offensively. They rank ninth in scoring averaging 4.59 runs per game. The Rangers rank 18th averaging just 4.26 runs per game.

Defensively, it is again Cleveland with a slight edge. They rank 11th in scoring defense, allowing opponents an average of 4.06 runs per game (3.63 at home). The Rangers rank 12th as they are allowing 4.09 runs per game (3.50 on the road).

Rangers Trying To Stay In Contention In American League

After an offseason that saw them spend big money on the likes of Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Jon Gray, and Kole Calhoun, the Texas Rangers are trying their best to stay in contention. While they have struggled at home (13-16), they have actually been at least respectable on the road (12-12).

Seager has led the new guys in terms of production. He is hitting .232/.299/.424 with 11 home runs, 25 runs batted in, and 26 runs scored.

Calhoun has also done well, hitting .247/.305/.432 with seven home runs, 21 runs batted in, and 20 runs scored.

Semien has been the concern to this point. Signed to a seven-year, $175 million contract, he is hitting just .196/.257/.292 with three home runs and 19 runs batted in during his first year with the club.

Guardians Have Big Opportunity

This is the fourth series in a row that the Guardians have faced a team with a winning percentage under .500. If they can take care of business like in their last two series, they have an opportunity to pick up some ground in the division.

In their careers against Jon Gray, Guardians’ hitters are a combined 6 for 30 against the righty. Against Taylor Hearn, Game 2’s starter, the team is a combined 4 for 13.

Jose Ramirez continues to lead the club offensively. In 182 at bats, he is hitting .291/.393/.632 with a team-leading 14 home runs, 53 runs batted in, 33 runs, and seven stolen bases.

Cleveland Tries To Sweep The Day

With the way the trends have gone, Cleveland could be in a good spot to pick up a couple wins Tuesday. Not only are they 5-1 in their last six games, but they are 8-3 in their last 11 games at Progressive Field against the Rangers.

Obviously, it will be interesting to see who Terry Francona rolls with in Game 2, but if the offense can do their part, they should have a good opportunity to win both.
