Guardians shortstop Ernie Clement celebrates defeating the Colorado Rockies

Thursday features the finale of a three-game series between the Cleveland Guardians (31-27) and the Colorado Rockies (27-36). The Rockies will host this one at Coors Field with first pitch scheduled for 3:10 p.m.

The Guardians will go for the sweep in this one after winning Wednesday’s game 7-5. Konnor Pilkington gave up four runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings for the Guardians while the bullpen combined to allow just one run over 4.2 innings.

Offensively, Amed Rosario hit his first home run of the season. On the night, he went three for five with four runs scored. Jose Ramirez also did well going four for five with a run scored.

Charlie Blackmon and Yonathan Daza both had two hits for the Rockies, but despite their 10 total hits, the Rockies left 17 runners stranded on base.

Pitching Matchup

The Guardians will send 24-year-old Triston McKenzie to the bump Thursday. In 11 games this season, he is 3-5 with a 3.09 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and has 55 strikeouts in 64 innings of work. He took a no-decision in his start against the A’s after giving up two earned runs over six innings of work.

The Rockies will counter with righty Chad Kuhl. This season, he is 4-3 with a 3.70 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and has 42 strikeouts in 58.1 innings. Kuhl was rocked by the Padres in his last start, giving up five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings.

Cleveland Trying To Finish Off The Sweep

The Guardians continue to be on quite a roll as they have now won eight of their last 10 and sit just 2.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central. With a brutal stretch coming up in their schedule, including eight games against the Twins before the end of June, the Guardians will try to close out the sweep on the Rockies Thursday.

Only Josh Naylor, Jose Ramirez, and Amed Rosario have at bats against Chad Kuhl in their careers, and they are hitless in seven at bats combined. Still, the Guardians have some batters that hit righties well.

In 154 at bats versus righties, Jose Ramirez is hitting .325/.423/.714 with 13 home runs and 49 runs batted in. Josh Naylor has also done well, hitting .313/.373/.576 with six home runs and 28 runs batted in.

Rockies Trying To Save Face In Finale

At 27-36, things are obviously not going in the right direction for Colorado. They sit in last in the NL West, 12.5 games out of first place. Trying to keep some semblance of respect, they will attempt to salvage the finale of this series Thursday.

Charlie Blackmon has arguably been the Rockies best hitter over the last two weeks. In the last 14 games, he is hitting .290/.313/.484 with three home runs and 10 runs batted in.

On the season, it is C.J. Cron who has been the most productive. In 246 at bats, he is hitting .289/.340/.533 with a team-leading 14 home runs, 43 runs batted in, and 36 runs scored.

Cleveland Has Good Chance To Finish Sweep

Even though the outcomes have not been there in terms of wins, Triston McKenzie continues to pitch well for Cleveland. He pitched well in his last start against Oakland, and he will look to replicate that performance Thursday.

If Cleveland’s offense can figure out Chad Kuhl, McKenzie is more than capable of holding the Rockies to just a couple runs, making the under 11.5 very interesting in this one.

With a series win in their back pocket, don’t be surprised if Cleveland is able to finish the sweep.
