Padres starting pitcher Mike Clevinger looks on in the second inning

Tuesday starts a brief two-game interleague series as the Cleveland Guardians (64-56) take on the San Diego Padres (68-56). This game will be played at Petco Park in San Diego with first pitch scheduled for 9:40 p.m.

After Sunday’s game was rained out, the Guardians will come into this one after having two straight days off. Prior to Sunday’s cancellation, the Guardians had split two games with the Chicago White Sox.

Cleveland currently leads the AL Central by 1.5 games over the Minnesota Twins. Still, with three teams separated by just three games, every win is essential for the Guardians.

San Diego sits in second in the NL West, but they sit 18 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. If the season ended today, though, they would still be in the playoffs as a Wild Card team.

The Padres also split their last series with the Washington Nationals. After losing the first two games, the Padres won back-to-back games by a score of 2-1.

Pitching Matchup

Cleveland will send righty Aaron Civale out for the opener. In 14 games this season, he is 2-5 with a 5.63 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and he has 66 strikeouts in 64 innings. In Civale’s last start, he gave up just one run in six innings while striking out 10 against the Tigers.

San Diego will counter with righty Mike Clevinger. In 15 games, the 31-year-old is 4-4 with a 3.63 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and he has 66 strikeouts in 74.1 innings. In Clevinger’s last 14 innings combined, he has given up nine runs while striking out just seven.

Cleveland Tries To Stay Over .500 On The Road

Coming into play Tuesday, the Guardians have been solid both at home and on the road. While they are 32-25 at Progressive Field, they are 32-31 on the road this season. Trying to stay over .500 as the visitor on the scoreboard, Cleveland will try to take down the Padres Tuesday.

Albeit in a limited sample size, Cleveland hitters haven’t had too much success against Clevinger. In 16 combined at bats, they have just three hits and one run batted in.

Against righties, third baseman Jose Ramirez has been the Guardians’ best hitter. In 336 at bats versus righties, he is hitting .295/.360/.574 with 19 home runs and 82 runs batted in.

Josh Naylor (.297 avg, 14 HR, 47 RBI) and Andres Gimenez (.314 avg, 11 HR, 47 RBI) have also had success this season against right-handers.

Padres Look To Use Home Field Advantage

While the Padres sit 18 games back in their own division, they still have the fifth-best record in the National League entering play Tuesday. Especially solid at Petco Park, where they are 35-26, the Padres will look to use their home field advantage to secure another win.

With only two games separating three teams for the last two Wild Card spots, every win is crucial for the Padres at this point.

Offensively, Manny Machado and Juan Soto are the big names for Civale to look out for. This season, Machado is hitting .302/.372/.530 with a team-high 22 home runs, 76 runs batted in, and 77 runs scored.

The biggest name moved at the trade deadline, Soto is hitting .252/.413/.481 with 23 home runs, 50 runs batted in, and 76 runs between his time with the Nationals and Padres.

Civale Is Key To Opening Win

While the Guardians are 6-1 in their last seven road games, this one will still likely boil down to how well Aaron Civale can limit the big bats in the Padres’ offense. If he can hold Machado and Soto quiet, the Guardians should have a good shot at taking the opener on the road.

San Diego has played well as home this season and are 9-4 in their last 13 games at Petco Park. With two teams who have a lot on the line, Tuesday should be a fun matchup. For Guardians’ fans, it will be even better if they can pick up win No. 65.
