FC Cincinnati vs. New England Revolution July 3rd Betting Preview & Picks

FC Cincinnati has a penchant for wild games, with a 5-4 affair last season and a 4-4 draw this week that featured a blown 3-0 lead in the first half.

Now the Orange and Blue are tied for sixth place in the Eastern Conference, and this weekend they travel to face the team they are tied with New England Revolution. Saturday’s kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, streaming on ESPN+ and airing locally in both markets.

These teams have met five times, with New England winning four and FCC taking one. FCC won their first-ever appearance in New England 2-0 in 2019 but lost the next four games by a combined 10-3. Last month the Revs came to Cincinnati and won 3-2, and last year they won the matchup at home 4-1. 

Brenner Coming to Life for FC Cincinnati

The Orange and Blue had a dream start on Wednesday against NYCFC, then had to scramble just to earn a point. Luciano Acosta scored 15 minutes into the game, and Brenner put two goals on the board in the next 15 minutes for a 3-0 lead. But the lead was gone by halftime, and FCC needed a Brenner hat-trick in the 70th minute just to earn a draw in a wild 4-4 contest.

With the positive result, their third straight, FCC have tied their franchise record with 24 points. They have a losing record at home at 3-4 with one draw in eight games but this week go on the road where they are 4-3 with two draws.

FC Cincinnati has at least one goal in 10 straight games, and they have scored at least two goals in four of the last six games. However, the defense has allowed two or more goals seven times this season, including three of the last five. That leaves FCC with a -3 goal differential, 27 goals scored, and 30 allowed.

Brenner had gone 12 games without scoring and now has four goals in the last two games. He scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Orlando City last weekend and had the first hat-trick in FCC history on Wednesday.

Acosta had two assists on Wednesday and leads the team with five on the season while adding six goals. Striker Brandon Vazquez leads FCC with eight goals and has added three assists. Vazquez and Alvaro Barreal scored in the first game against New England this season.

Goalkeeper Roman Celentano got his 10th start of the season against NYCFC. He has allowed 16 goals with 29 saves, and he saved a penalty kick against NYCFC on Wednesday. Alec Kann started the first seven games of the season with 14 goals allowed and one clean sheet before losing his job to Celentano.

New Look Revolution

Last year was a dream regular season for the New England Revolution as they won the Supporters Shield by a wide margin atop the Eastern Conference. The dream turned into a nightmare in the playoffs with an early exit, and the start to the 2022 season has been very inconsistent.

They have also lost leading scorer Adam Buksa and goalkeeper Matt Turner to European teams in the transfer window. Buksa scored seven goals and had two assists in 10 games this season before leaving. Turner, who could start for the U.S. at the World Cup, was hurt to start the season and allowed seven goals in five games this season.

Manager Bruce Arena has used three goalies to try and replace Turner. Dorde Petrovic made his fourth straight start on Sunday at Vancouver after joining the team from Serbia earlier this season.

Carles Gil, the reigning MLS MVP, has four goals and six assists to lead the Revs. Gustavo Bou has three goals, while Brandon Bye has two goals and four assists.

The Revs haven’t looked great, but they are playing better, unbeaten in nine straight. This is a winnable game for FC Cincinnati, but they can’t have the lapses like they did on Wednesday when they allowed three goals in six minutes; with Brenner playing confidently, FCC can take the next step forward if their defense goes with them.
