RBC Canadian Open Golf Betting Preview

The RBC Canadian Open returns to the PGA Tour schedule this week for the first time in two years after the COVID-19 pandemic postponed the tournament every year since 2019.

Play resumes this week at St. George’s Golf and County Club in Ontario, Canada, beginning on Thursday, June 9th, and ending on Sunday, June 12th.

Rory McIlroy has been the defending champion for three years, posting a tournament-record 22-under par in his victory at Hamilton Golf and Country Club in 2019. McIlroy rolled to a comfortable seven-shot victory over runner-ups Shane Lowry and Webb Simpson.

The winner of the tournament takes home $1.566 million dollars of the $8.7 million dollar purse. The victor also receives 500 FedEx Cup points.

St. George’s Golf and Country Club

St. George’s Golf and Country Club has hosted the Canadian Open five times prior to 2022, the last in 2010. The course plays as a par-70 and runs just over 7,000 yards in length. Established in 1929, the course was designed by Stanley Thompson.

While the course is considered to be one of the best properties in Canada, the logistics of the property cause headache for fans, participants, volunteers, and tournament workers.

The course property runs along numerous valleys, and players will be hitting from uneven lies, thick rough, and putting on ungulated greens. After the damage to the greens caused by an ice storm in 2013, all the greens were re-worked the following year.

The Canadian Open Field

Serving as the final tune-up before next week’s US Open, the Canadian Open field is littered with the top players in the world. World no. 1 Scottie Scheffler headlines the list of players that also includes defending champion Rory McIlroy.

PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas makes his return to the Canadian Open for the second time. He will be joined by the likes of Cameron Smith, Tony Finau, Shane Lowry, and Matthew Fitzpatrick.

Corey Conners is the top Canadian in the field among 21 of his fellow countrymen.

The duo of Thomas (+900) and Scheffler (+850) sit atop the betting boards heading into Thursday’s opening tee time. Both players come into the tournament playing some of the best golf of their careers.

Defending champion McIlroy is (+900). McIlroy is coming off a T18 at the Memorial Tournament last week and has three other top-10 finishes in his last starts.

Cameron Smith (+1100) finishes out the top four favorites. Smith has been one of the most consistent golfers this season, with a pair of victories and ten top-25 finishes in 12 starts.

Conners (+2200) is the betting favorite for the Canadian contingent, followed by Mackenzie Hughes (+6600).

Value plays and names to watch include Ohio-native Harold Varner III (+3300), Tony Finau (+2500), and two-time Canadian Open winner Jhonattan Vegas (+6600).
