Hudson Swafford walks to the practice range

The American Express is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour. It has been played under several title sponsors, including the Chrysler Classic and Humana Challenge. It is a pro-am event played over 72 holes with a cut after three rounds. The tournament’s current host course (2022) is PGA West Stadium, alongside two other courses in the same California area.

Bettors considering the American Express golf odds should bear in mind long rounds and focus on players who enjoy the pro-am concept. Hudson Swafford won the event twice between 2017 and 2022, so has a game suited to the format. The January date and the pro-am element could affect the quality of the field, but if competing, Rory McIlroy would be a worthy +8000 favorite.

American Express Format

The American Express is played on three courses in rotation in California, with the final 18 holes taking place at PGA West Stadium Course. It is part of the ‘West Coast Swing,’ so players with a good record on this part of the tour have an advantage. In any normal year, even aged over 50, you would have to consider Phil Mickelson, the two-time winner.

However, his involvement in LIV golf means his participation in PGA events is under discussion. In the absence of Mickelson, Patrick Cantley may appear prominently in American Express golf odds at about +8000. The runner-up in 2021 could add to his tally of tour wins in a future tournament played under the title of American Express.

The three host courses are par 72 tracks below 7,200 yards in length. From 2013 to 2022, the winning score was 20 under or better. Those scores suggest the courses are fairly easy and set up to be relatively undemanding for the amateurs.

The courses put a premium on driving distance over the accuracy, and birdie conversion is a key discipline. These attributes will be reflected in American Express golf odds. There have been three playoffs in that 10-year period and winning margins of 1 or 2 strokes.

If Scottie Scheffler has the event on his schedule, the 2022 Masters champion should be prominent in the betting. It depends on the overall quality of the field, but +1200 would be a fair price for a player with a calm personality who should not be distracted by his amateur partner.

Match American Express Golf Odds

There are usually American Express golf odds for pro head-to-head matches. With two amateurs in a group, 18-hole matches are three-way markets, including the Tie.

Sportsbooks also feature 72-hole match bets, won by the professional that returns the lowest score over four rounds. If one player misses the cut, his opponent wins this market. You can also place wagers at American Express golf odds for the first-round leader.

American Express Live Betting

The format of the event with amateur players competing means rounds can take more than five hours. Hence, the tournament is good for live betting due to fluctuations in the scoring and American Express golf odds. There is the cash-out option whereby bettors take control of bets before the final outcome. There are also several other live betting American Express golf odds markets.
