‘The Open’ is the most prestigious title in golf and is the championship most players would like to win more than any other. The winner is announced as the Champion Golfer of the Year, and all the greats of the sport have won the iconic Claret Jug.

Leading sportsbooks issue a range of markets with British Open golf odds. The fourth of four majors is always played on a links course, in rotation at top venues in England, Scotland, and Ireland. Despite the emergence of LIV, The Open remains at the pinnacle of the sport.

British Open Betting Markets

Sportsbooks issue a range of British Open golf odds for a championship that is played in the third week in July. It is the season’s final major championship and follows the Masters Tournament, USPGA Championship, and US Open earlier in the season.

This article explains the main British Open golf odds betting markets.

Moneyline Winner

The championship winner market is the most popular Open Championship bet. Since the start of the century, the winners have come from the following countries:

  • United States - 10
  • Ireland/Northern Ireland - 5
  • South Africa - 3
  • Italy - 1
  • Canada - 1
  • Sweden - 1

At the time of writing, Rory McIlroy is the favorite in British Open golf odds at +800. Defending champion, Cameron Smith, can be backed at +2100 while Tiger Woods appears in the betting at +10000. However, the three-time champion is not a definite starter.

That means if you backed McIlroy with a $100 bet, you would win $800 in profit.

Each Way British Open Golf Odds

Each-way betting is popular in British Open golf odds because of the attractive place terms. Sportsbooks settle each-way bets down to 10 places at one-fifth the win odds, which is an outstanding concession. The trade-off with extra places is less value in the win odds.

The cream usually rises to the top in The Open, but less-fancied outsiders often make the 10 payout places. Course and links golf experience are more important in the Open Championship than in the other majors. As an example, Jordan Spieth is +400 for a 2023 top 10 finish.

Match Betting

There will be British Open golf odds for 18-hole 2 and 3 balls and 72-hole match betting. The first two rounds of the championship are played in threes, so typical odds are as follows:

  • Rory McIlroy +125
  • Jon Rahm +175
  • Scottie Scheffler +225

The 18-hole match bets for the third and fourth rounds and the 72-hole bets are three-way options, including the Tie. The objective of match betting is to predict the player to record the lowest score over a single or four rounds.

Futures British Open Golf Odds

Futures betting is always popular for the British Open. Sportsbooks issue odds almost a full year ahead of the event. You will find value in the futures odds, but there is ‘action’ even if the backed player does not take part.

Live Betting

There will be live betting on the championship as the action unfolds. There should be the option to cash out bets, guarantee a profit or limit the loss from pre-event or live bets before they expire.
