The MLB season is set to get underway soon, and people are sharing all kinds of predictions for the 2022 campaign. From the World Series Winner, to All-Star selections and so much more, picks are flying around so far during Spring Training.

Today, we are going to take a look at the American League Cy Young odds and then make our picks. There are a number of quality pitchers in the league who will make a run at winning the award this year. But only one can emerge as AL Cy Young in the end.

Without further ado, let’s get right into it.

The Favorites

The favorites for the entire MLB are led by Jacob DeGrom +380. However, Gerritt Cole +425 opens the season with the best odds to win the award in the AL. He is followed by Cleveland’s own Shane Bieber +700.

Bieber won the award in 2020 but dealt with injuries in 2021. He leads a strong Guardians pitching staff heading into this season and should be in the Cy Young conversation as long as he stays on the field.

Robbie Ray came out of nowhere to win it in 2021. The reigning Cy Young award winner has an even better chance of winning in 2022 after signing with the Mariners over the offseason and moving to pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park. His odds are listed at +900.

The aforementioned trio are followed by Lucas Giolito +1100, Sean Manaea +1400, Lance McCullers Jr. +1400, and Dylan Cease +1400.

Following this upper-echelon of stars is a very interesting dark horse.

The Dark Horse

Shane McClanahan of the Tampa Bay Rays is listed at +1600 to win the Cy Young in 2022. The 24-year old left-hander is fresh off of a strong rookie campaign that saw him finish with a 3.43 ERA and 141 strikeouts over 25 games.

McClanahan features a hard fastball that sits in the mid-high 90’s, as well as quality breaking stuff. With Tyler Glasnow still recovering from Tommy John surgery, McClanahan very well could emerge as the ace of Tampa Bay’s staff.

AL Cy Young Pick

There are certainly other options than those we listed here. If you wanted to roll with Kevin Gausman or Shohei Ohtani, I would not blame you.

But one pitcher stands out from the list we discussed.

Shane Bieber was electric in 2020 and started off 2021 on a high note en route to an All-Star selection before being plagued by injury. But Cleveland’s superstar ace is still just 26 years old and might have even bigger things in store moving forward.

He will obviously have stiff competition in pitchers such as Gerrit Cole, Robbie Ray, and even Shane McClanahan. But as far as good bets go, I like the idea of rolling with Bieber +700 to win his second career Cy Young in 2022. It was not all that long ago that Cleveland had a different pitcher who won multiple Cy Young awards, as Corey Kluber accomplished the feat in 2014 and 2017.

Bieber will look to replicate what Kluber did and win the award for a second time this season while leading the Guardians to the postseason.
