Cleveland Browns vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Betting Preview

The Cleveland Browns will begin the 2021 preseason schedule by heading to Jacksonville on Saturday night for a matchup with the Jaguars. Cleveland begins the 2021 season with plenty of optimism, but much of that is saved for the regular season.

The Browns ended a long playoff drought in 2020 and even managed to win a playoff game over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now the Browns are looking to become a real threat to win the AFC, and it all starts Saturday night.

Jacksonville went just 1-15 a season ago, and this team wasn't very competitive in most of those losses. The Jaguars can only improve from an abysmal 2020 season, and the preseason games are important to this franchise.

The Cleveland Browns are 2.5 point underdogs in the preseason opener down in Jacksonville.

Browns Ready For Next Step

Cleveland came out of nowhere to contend for the AFC North title a season ago, and the growth of quarterback Baker Mayfield had a lot to do with it. Mayfield still has some growing up to do, but don't expect to see him at all in this game.

Few teams ran the ball as well as the Browns a season ago, and that same offensive strategy is going to be used once again. Don't expect to see Nick Chubb or Kareem Hunt getting many touches on Saturday, but the Browns will be running the ball.

Cleveland was able to hold the mighty Kansas City Chiefs to just 22 points in a playoff loss, and that unit will need to lead the way again. The defense should be strong on Saturday night, and they won't make things easy on the Jacksonville offense.

Plenty of New Faces For Jags

Jacksonville has a new coaching staff in place, and there are also several new faces on this roster. The preseason schedule is extremely important for the Jaguars as it will help establish how things will go during the regular season.

Rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence is expected to suit up for this game, and that is going to make the Jaguars a tough team to stop. Most first-team offenses don’t see much action in the preseason, but Cleveland is going to face the best players from Jacksonville.

Jacksonville still has some major questions on the defensive side of the ball, but this offense could be tough to stop.

Will Cleveland Compete?

The real test for Cleveland will begin in the regular season, and you aren't going to see a real spirited effort from the Browns. There are still some roster spots available. Motivation to play hard in this game could be lacking.

Jacksonville has to turn things around in a hurry, and each preseason game will be important. The Jaguars also have a slight edge by playing at home but don't expect a big crowd on hand for this game.

Cleveland is clearly a much better team than Jacksonville, but that rarely matters in the preseason. This game will be decided by which team comes ready to play.
