Betting Odds
Williams came out the gate as a heavy favorite, but as we get closer to the event, we see Frank Gore closing in as folks line up their bets. As of now, Williams remains a (-165) favorite over Gore (+135).
Derron Williams
Derron Williams has had a highly successful career in the NBA, playing over 800 games and making his way to the all-star team three times. He was a dominant point guard in his prime and averaged 16.3 points per game. Williams has also made three appearances in the Olympics, winning two gold medals and one bronze.
As a long-time fight fan, Williams has been training various martial arts and even owns an MMA gym in Dallas. With all that time spent in the gym over the previous five years, Williams is excited to have an opportunity to showcase what he learned in the ring. He also wrestled in high school but is now putting all of his efforts into boxing to prepare for the upcoming fight.
Frank Gore
Frank Gore has also had a stellar career in the NFL. Before retirement, Gore played 16 seasons in the league, tying him for the most in NFL history for a running back. With 16,000 rushing yards, Gore has proved his toughness and grit at one of the most demanding positions in football.
Gore took up boxing to stay in shape and improve his footwork along with his coordination. He trains six days a week and has been doing it since he got drafted in 2005. Gore cites "jogging" as one of the most challenging things he had to learn for his debut match in preparation for the fight. He is excited about the matchup and has even turned down offers to return to the NFL in order to continue his boxing.
Frank Gore vs. Derron Williams Prediction
Being that this is their first-ever boxing match, it is hard to predict what will happen or what they will even look like going into this matchup. The bout is sanctioned for four rounds, and cardio is always an issue for first-timers.
At 6'3, Williams holds a 6-inch height advantage over the 5'9 Frank Gore. This could make it difficult for Gore to close the distance against a much taller, much longer Derron Williams. Williams also owns an MMA gym, where he regularly surrounds himself with professional fighters that give him a good understanding of what it takes to prepare for a scrap.
It will be an exciting night in Tampa, and it will be interesting to see how this plays out! With the resources at William's disposal, along with the size advantage, it will be a tall order for the old runningback. But in boxing or any combat sport for that matter, anything can happen, and one punch can change everything.
