San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo throws a pass vs. Seattle Seahawks

A pair of 1-1 teams will face off on Sunday Night Football to cap the NFL Week 3 Sunday slate, when the San Francisco 49ers take on the Denver Broncos in Mile High.

Both teams rebounded from a season-opening loss on the road to pick up a win at home in their second contest. This week, both sides will look to start their first winning streak of the season, but will need to overcome a stout opposing defense to do it.

San Francisco 49ers

After losing in Week 1 to the Chicago Bears, the San Francisco 49ers bounced back with a 27-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2.

On the plus side for the Niners, their defense continued to play well, as they have allowed just 8.5 points per game through two weeks.

On the negative side, however, the 49ers lost their starting quarterback Trey Lance for the remainder of the season due to injury.

Without Lance, the 49ers will go back to Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback for the year, who they contemplated trading before the start of the season. Garoppolo stepped in for Lance and threw for 151 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions against Seattle.

With a full week to prepare for a starting role this week, it will be interesting to see how Garoppolo performs against Denver.

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos won in a defensive struggle against the Houston Texans in Week 2, moving to 1-1 with a 16-9 victory. Denver outgained the Texans by a 350-234 margin in the game, but for the second straight week, struggled to take advantage of a huge yardage edge over their opponents with a convincing performance on the scoreboard.

This week, the Broncos will look to score over 16 points for the first time on the season in hopes of moving to 2-1.

On the bright side for the Broncos, their defense has performed incredibly well through two weeks.

They have allowed 13 points per game through two games, and have played six straight quarters of excellent defense after struggling in the first half against the Seahawks in Week 1.

If they can keep that up at home, the Broncos could win this game even if its offense is not at its best.

Keys To The Game

The biggest key to this game for the 49ers is going to be their running game, which has been a strength under Kyle Shanahan.

If the Niners can get going with the run early and often, it will take so much pressure off of Jimmy Garoppolo in his first start since nearly being cast aside entirely by the franchise. That will be no easy task against Denver on the road, but that will be what determines how Sunday night goes more than the passing of Garoppolo.

For the Broncos, the play of Russell Wilson will be the key, as he simply needs to be better in this game than he has been over the first two weeks. Wilson has just two touchdown passes through two weeks, which is not the level of production the Broncos expected when they traded for him.

If Wilson is not more productive in enemy territory in this contest, the Broncos’ disappointing start could continue.
