Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady throws a pass against the Dallas Cowboys

The first Sunday of the 2022 NFL season will conclude with a massive Sunday Night Football game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys.

These teams opened their seasons against one another last year as well, with the Bucs picking up the win at home. In this Sunday night showdown, the Cowboys will look to flip the script on Tom Brady and company to start their season off with a statement victory.

The oddsmakers curently have the Buccaneers as -2.5 point favorites (-110). The Cowboys are underdogs as their moneyline bet currently holds (+117) odds.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Last time the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played in a competitive game, they were eliminated by the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional round of the playoffs. But rather than focusing on how the Buccaneers ended last season, it is worth focusing on how they started last season ahead of this game.

The Buccaneers beat the Cowboys at home to start last season, and are aiming to do the same on the road here after what was a difficult offseason to keep track of in Tampa Bay.

This offseason, Tom Brady informed the team that he would be retiring, only to walk that decision back as the summer went on. Now that he is with the team again, Brady is set to play under a new head coach in Todd Bowles.

With Brady’s expertise on offense, and Bowles being known for his defensive coaching ability, the Buccaneers could have just the right combination to get deep into the playoffs again this season.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys were ridiculed at the end of last season, as they let the clock run out while driving the ball down the field in the Wild Card round against the San Francisco 49ers.

Time ran out with the Cowboys in 49ers territory, as the Niners held onto win that game and eliminate the Cowboys. This season, some key changes have been made that could negatively impact the Cowboys roster.

Amari Cooper was dealt to Cleveland in the offseason, which could make things tougher on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. But, the loss of La’el Collins to the Bengals could be an even more significant loss.

Collins was a staple of the offensive line for the Cowboys over the last few years, and they will need to figure out how to make up for his absence in a hurry.

Keys To The Game

The biggest key to this game on both sides is going to be avoiding turnovers. The season opener between Dallas and Tampa Bay last season was filled with turnovers on both sides that nearly cost the Bucs the game and did cost Dallas the game. The team that is best at managing their turnovers will have a huge edge here.

Also vital will be how both teams respond to losing elite pass catching targets in the offseason. I’n addition to Cooper of the Cowboys, Tampa Bay also lost Rob Gronkowski, who has been a preferred target for Tom Brady for years.

The quarterback who adjusts best is in a good place to win on Sunday Night Football in week one.
