Who Is Gavin Williams? Cleveland Indians No. 23 Overall MLB Draft Pick

With the 23rd pick in the 2021 MLB first year player draft your Cleveland Indians selected Gavin Williams a pitcher from Eastern Carolina University.

To be honest I am pretty content with the pick.

Williams Ranking

Coming into the draft Williams was listed as the No. 31 prospect by MLB and No. 30 overall by Baseball America. And with the Indians propensity to develop pitching and Williams big frame at 6-foot-6 and 238 pounds the potential is there for another star in the making.

Williams College Success

In his three seasons at ECU, Williams pitched to an ERA of .265 over 53 career appearances, including a 1.88 in his senior season. Striking out an even 200 hitters and walking just 53 over 149.1 innings. Moreover during his 4 years in college opposing hitters had a batting average against Williams of just above .200.

With a fastball that touches 100 and sits in the 94-97 MPH range and an extremely sharp curveball it’s no surprise he drew the attention of the Tribe as an underrated prospect. If the Indians can work their pitching magic Williams can easily be in the Tribe rotation in a year or two as a power arm in the back end of an already promising young rotation.
