Tucker Barnhart delivered a clutch two-out single in the 10th inning, and Reds reliever Amir Garrett worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the 10th, allowing the Cincinnati Reds to continue their winning ways with a 6-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday night.

In their first six games of the season, all played at home, the Cincinnati offense set a franchise record with 57 runs scored, averaging 9.5 runs per game. The offensive production slowed just a little bit in their first game on the road, but the six runs on 11 hits were enough to get it done in game one of a three-game series in Arizona.

Game two of the series features the Reds' Jeff Hoffman taking on Diamondbacks starting pitcher Riley Smith.

Reds Starting Pitching

Hoffman 2021 Stats

1-0, 5 IP, 1.80 ERA, 0.60 WHIP, 6 K’s

Last year in Colorado, Hoffman appeared in 16 games. In his 21.1 innings pitched, he struggled with a 9.28 ERA. In one start this year as a Red, Hoffman looked like a completely different pitcher, shutting down the St. Louis Cardinals in his five innings of work.

Diamondbacks Starting Pitching

Smith 2021 Stats

0-0, 5 IP, 3.60 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 4 K’s

In 2020, Smith made six appearances for Arizona and pitched a total of 18.1 innings. He had an impressive 1.47 ERA, 1.10 WHIP while striking out 18.

Reds’ Bullpen

Reds starter Tyler Mahle managed only four innings pitched in game one of the series. Cincinnati was forced to use six relievers to get through the final six innings.

Cincinnati closer Amir Garrett worked the final inning yesterday, throwing 16 pitches to record his three outs. Friday night was Garrett’s first appearance since April 7, and if needed, he should be available today.

Diamondbacks’ Bullpen

Arizona starter Taylor Widener managed to work five innings for the Diamondbacks last night. Arizona used four relievers to get the final 15 outs, including temporary closer Stefan Crichton for one inning.

Crichton is just one of the arms expected to get some save opportunities in Arizona while Joakim Soria is out with an injury. Crichton threw just six pitches to record his three outs and could probably be called upon again for game two if necessary.

Year-to-Date Offense

Reds

.310 BA, 63 Runs, 15 Home Runs, .391 OBP, .580 SLG

Diamondbacks

.205 BA, 30 Runs, 9 Home Runs, .279 OBP, .358 SLG

Weather

Arizona’s Chase Field (formerly Bank One Ballpark) is a retractable dome stadium, so the weather will not impact this game.

Odds

Reds Moneyline: (-125)

Diamondbacks Moneyline: (+115)

Over/Under: (+9.5 -115 Over)

The Diamondbacks are still without Ketel Marte in their lineup along with their projected closer, Soria. Last night the Reds Jesse Winker didn’t finish the game because of calf cramps, and his status for game two of this series is not yet known.

Expect the Reds to come away with another win Saturday night in the desert.
