Regardless of your team, this wildcard matchup is one for the ages, with defending champions taking on World Series hopefuls and comeback kids facing their rivals. These matchups have something for everyone! Now, let's take a closer look at the games:
Detroit Tigers (+106) @ Cleveland Guardians (-132):
Spread: Cleveland Guardians -1.5 Over/Under: 6.5
Pitching: Casey Mize (14-6, 3.87 ERA) VS Tanner Bibee (12-11, 4.24 ERA)
Story: Guardsball.
Series: Detroit Tigers Lead 1-0
San Diego Padres (-105) @ Chicago Cubs (-120):
Spread: San Diego Padres -1.5 Over/Under: 6.5
Pitching: Dylan Cease (8-12, 4.55 ERA) VS Andrew Kittredge (4-3, 3.40 ERA)
Story: San Diego falls to Chicago in Game 1, Nick Pivetta gives up back-to-back home runs to give the Cubs the lead in the bottom of the 5th. The Padres' offense never could get going with 1 run off 4 hits. They’ll look to tie the series up tonight as Dylan Cease takes the mound. The Cubs, however, have an interesting strategy with relief pitcher Andrew Kittredge taking the mound as the Game 2 starter. This is an interesting move, especially since they are up game and Imanaga would be coming in off regular rest to pitch in the series, almost guaranteeing a win (12.1 innings, 2 runs, and 11 Ks in 2 games versus the Padres this year). Luckily, though, it seems the strikeouts are plentiful for the Cubs pitchers as they notched 13 last night. If they can do that again, they’ll be in line to take on the Brewers in the NLDS.
Series: Chicago Cubs Lead 1-0
Boston Red Sox (+148) @ New York Yankees (-186):
Spread: New York Yankees -1.5 Over/Under: 7.5
Pitching: Brayan Bello (11-9, 3.35 ERA) VS Carlos Rodón (18-9, 3.09 ERA)
Story: Red Sox fans have got to be feeling good after that masterclass Chapman put together in the bottom of the 9th inning to put the only MVP scared to perform in October and the rest of the Yankees to bed after loading the bases. Not only did Chapman look fantastic, but Garrett Crochet went THE DISTANCE, retiring 11 via the K and 17 consecutively. Brayan Bello will have to put together a solid performance against the Yankees to launch the Red Sox into the ALDS. He’s been wildly successful against them this season, posting a 2-1, 1.89 ERA and 17 Ks. If he can find his groove again tonight, then Boston will be lined up to take on the Blue Jays in Toronto.
Series: Boston Red Sox Lead 1-0
Cincinnati Reds (+235) @ Los Angeles Dodgers (-35):
Spread: Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 Over/Under: 7.5
Pitching: Zach Littell (10-8, 3.81 ERA) VS Yoshinobu Yamamoto (12-8, 2.49 ERA)
Story: It looks like the lights may have been too bright for this young Cincinnati team. The Reds never really had a chance against the power-hitting Dodgers, as they scored runs in all but 3 of their innings, as they demolished the Reds 10-5. Now, the Reds are in a tough spot. Hunter Greene gave them their best shot to win, and with their offense facing Yamamoto, they’ll be in for a tough matchup. But all hope is not lost. Yamamoto has been hit hard this season a few times before, and when he does, it’s usually a big night for the Dodgers' opponents. However, even if the Reds do manage to sneak a victory tonight, odds are Shohei Ohtani will be lined up to take the mound, and they’ll need a miracle to take the win. Regardless of who takes this series, they’ll have a tough challenge ahead of them with a well-rested Philly team waiting.
Series: Los Angeles Dodgers Lead 1-0
