On Monday Night Football in Week 4, a rematch of the most recent NFC Championship Game will take place. The Los Angeles Rams will visit the San Francisco 49ers in a contest with huge early season implications for both teams.

With the winner of this game set to move to 2-0 in division games, there is a lot of pressure on the Rams and Niners to get the job done here against another team with playoff aspirations.

Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams have won two straight games after opening their season with a loss to the Buffalo Bills. Those wins have come against the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals, moving the Rams to the top of the NFC West standings through three weeks.

Here, the Rams will look for a third straight win, which would keep them in sole possession of first place going into Week 5.

For the Rams, this will be the first real road test of the year, as their only other road game this season was against a Cardinals team that they have dominated in recent years.

Things have been much more evenly matched for the Rams against the 49ers during the Sean McVay era. However, a win on the road here would be a massive statement that the defending champions are not to be counted out this season.

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers enter Week 4 as a slight favorite against the Los Angeles Rams despite a 1-2 start to the year. Kyle Shanahan’s team lost their opener in rainy conditions to the Chicago Bears, then beat the Seattle Seahawks before losing an 11-10 game to the Denver Broncos on the road last week.

Here, the Niners will aim to improve to 2-0 at home on the season, with both of those wins coming against division foes.

After last week, the offense is the area of focus for the 49ers this week, as Jimmy Garoppolo’s first start of the season did not go well against Denver.

Playing in the place of the injured Trey Lance, Garoppolo’s offense generated just 10 points, and he made multiple mistakes that helped Denver come away with a win. This week, Garoppolo must be better for the Niners to avenge their NFC title game defeat.

Keys To The Game

For the Rams, the biggest key to this game is not letting the San Francisco offense get rolling on the ground. Preventing the 49ers from running traditionally and through sweeps with players like Deebo Samuel will put a ton of pressure on Garoppolo to deliver through the air.

Forcing the Niners to beat them with a suspect passing game would put the Rams at a huge advantage in this rivalry matchup.

On the San Francisco side, the biggest key to this game is continuing to play stellar defense. No matter how well their offense is operating, the Niners will not be able to keep up with the Rams in a shootout.

Instead, they need to limit Cooper Kupp and stop the run to give themselves the best chance to win this game.
