Evan Mobley & Jarrett Allen: A Match Made in Heaven

On Thursday, the Cleveland Cavaliers made Evan Mobley, center from USC, the third-overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

In other words, the Cleveland Cavaliers may have found their superstar of the future.

Evan Mobley just 20 years young, standing at 7-foot-0.

The Cavaliers already employ a 7-foot center, well technically a 6-foot-11 center, but you get the point…

That man is Jarrett Allen.

On July 23, the Cavaliers extended a qualifying offer to Allen, making him a restricted free agent.

Jarrett Allen is very much a part of the Cavaliers future plans, as is Evan Mobley.

Can Jarett Allen and Evan Mobley co-exist in the modern-day NBA?

Yes.

Think of the last two NBA Champions.

The Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Think about the 2020 Lakers Championship team that featured Anthony Davis, Javale McGee and Dwight Howard.

Think about the 2021 Milwaukee Bucks Championship team that featured Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez.

Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley are the perfect fit.

How will they co-exist?

Offensively, Evan Mobley is a threat to score anywhere from the three-point line in. He excels in pick and roll situations and can utilize both hands to score around the rim.

For Evan, the key is his ability to stretch the defense and hit shots from the perimeter. This will provide the offense the necessary spacing for Collin Sexton and Darius Garland to operate the offense.

Jarrett Allen on the other hand, does not obtain the offensive skill set that has coaches scribbling a play or two on their dry-erase board for him. Jarret’s offense comes from lobs off the pick and roll and cleaning up the occasional mess around the rim.

And that’s fine. In fact, that’s perfect.

Let Evan be Evan and Jarrett be Jarret - the offense will have a flow we haven’t seen in what seems like light years.

Here’s what really gets me excited… The defense.

Did I just say that? I thought I was a Millennial?

Anyway, who will be able to score in the paint against this Cavs front court?

Evan Mobley is extremely athletic, coordinated and mobile for a 7-footer.

Jarrett Allen is more of your traditional “7-footer” – protecting the paint and making your smaller guards look a tad more efficient on the defensive end.

I mentioned Giannis and Anthony Davis earlier – two guys who, when switched onto a smaller guard, can hold their own. In fact, they will win most switches on smaller guards.

Evan Mobley can be that.

Let Jarrett protect the paint and Evan run wild and this team will be well on it’s way to competing in the play-in tournament. This is a match made in heaven.
