The Akron Zips take their name from the “zippers'', a rubber overshoe made by MF Goodrich that was trendy during the ‘20s and the ‘30s.

The college conducted a campus-wide survey to pick a nickname for their sports team. Several options were put forward, such as Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Chevaliers, and Golden Blue Devils. Eventually, the university adopted ‘Zippers’ as the nickname for their sports team, before it was shortened down to Zips.

The Akron Zips football team participates in Division 1 of the NCAA and won their first Mid-American championship in 2005 while playing for the East Division. The team has a history of consistently performing well on the highest level of college football.
