History of the Akron Zips

The Akron Zips take their name from the “zippers'', a rubber overshoe made by MF Goodrich that was trendy during the ‘20s and the ‘30s.

The college conducted a campus-wide survey to pick a nickname for their sports team. Several options were put forward, such as Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Chevaliers, and Golden Blue Devils. Eventually, the university adopted ‘Zippers’ as the nickname for their sports team, before it was shortened down to Zips.

Over the next 30 years, Akron University would come to be classified as a Division 1-A or FBS program. In 2005, the Zips won the Mid-American Championship for the first time in history.

Akron Zips Odds and Betting Formats

If you’re about to bet with an American sportsbook, know that the odds you will see will most likely be represented in the American format. The other two odds formats are known as the decimal and fraction formats.

In the American format, odds are represented using whole numbers, with a plus or minus prefix to indicate the underdog and favorite in a particular bet. Look at the table below for an example of the three ways in which odds can be represented.

Akron Zips Betting - Types of bets

Moneyline betting

If you’re about to take your first steps into the world of betting and you’re not sure where to begin, then this is the place for you. Moneyline bets are one of the simplest wagers that players can participate in.

In a moneyline bet, you will be betting on whom you think is going to win a particular game. For example, you’d simply have to pick your winner in a match between the Zips and Rockets. The table in the previous section highlights an example of moneyline betting.

Total score or over/under bets

As you get comfortable with moneyline bets, you can venture into over/under bets. In this bet type, you will be betting on whether the actual aggregate score will be over or under the number proposed by a sportsbook.

If the sportsbook sets the number at 40.5 for an Akron Zips football bet, you can bet on whether the actual aggregate total (of both teams put together) will be over or under this aggregate score.

Spreads

Spread bets are placed on the margin of a result. In spread betting, you can pick different outcomes from both teams and secure your chances of a higher payout. Let’s consider an example where the Zips are given a -12 spread against the Rockets. If you bet on the Rockets, then they would have to win by a margin of more than 12 points for your bet to be successful.

If you were betting on the Rockets, then they would have to either win the game or lose by a margin of fewer than 12 points for your bet to win.

Parlays

In a parlay, you place several different bets under a single wager instead of placing each of them individually.

This increases the odds drastically as opposed to the odds you get when you place a bet on each of those outcomes individually; the big caveat, of course, is that all your bets (two and above) have to be right for you to win the wager. If even one of them fails, your whole parlay has failed.

Prop bets

Prop bets are probably the best fun you can have when looking at Akron Zips odds and betting. You’re betting on outcomes that may not have a bearing on the actual result of a match.

There are several types of prop bets that you can choose from. Some notable examples of prop bets in football are how many passing yards a player may cover, the result of the coin toss, the shortest touchdown scored, the highest number of touchdowns, and so on.

Futures and outright bets

If betting on margins isn’t your cup of tea, you could always look at outright bets and futures bets. Outright bets are pretty straightforward: you’ll be betting on which team you think will win a particular championship or tournament. In futures betting, you’ll be placing a bet on future outcomes, such as MVP of a season, the player with the most touchdowns, and other similar statistics.
