Toledo Rockets is the name given to the collective of intercollegiate athletic teams coming out of the University of Toledo. Toledo University is one of the premier institutions in the state of Ohio, USA. 

The Toledo Rockets are made up of a total of 15 teams. The men’s teams participate in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, and tennis championships, while the women’s teams compete in soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track & field, and volleyball, in addition to the sports that the men’s team take part in. 

A brief history of the Toledo Rockets

Toledo University’s tryst with sports began in 1917 under the guidance of John Brandeberry. According to lore, the team originated when a handful of students purchased uniforms and challenged the University of Detroit to a game of football. Shockingly, they lost the game 145-0. 

During the first few years of their existence, the team from Toledo played without a nickname. After securing two long touchdown runs during a loss to Carnegie Tech, the team was promptly dubbed the Rockets. From 1936 to 1942, head coach duties were handled by Clarence Spears, who also served as the university athletics director. Under Spears, the Rockets put together a record of 38-26-2, including five consecutive winning seasons. 

Toledo Greens Football

The most prolific sports team from Toledo University is the men’s football team. The men’s team competes in Division 1 of the NCAA FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision). Since 1936, the Toledo Rockets have finished in the top 25 on four occasions. In 2017, the Toledo Rockets became the Mid-American Conference champions under the guidance of Jason Candle. 

One of the most hotly-contested rivalries in American intercollegiate sports is between the Toledo Rockets and the Bowling Green Falcons. The two universities are situated within a few miles of each other and compete for bragging rights in an annual tournament called the Battle of I-75. 

Toledo Rockets Odds and Betting Formats

Depending on which sportsbook you place your bets with, Toledo Rockets odds and betting are usually presented in one of three formats. Odds that are described with whole numbers prefixed with a minus or plus sign are known as American odds. When the odds of a wager are given with decimal numbers, they are known as decimal odds. Moneyline betting

In this example, if you were to bet $120 on the Rockets, you would win $100 if they won the game. If you, instead, bet $100 on the Falcons, you would take home $120 if they won. 

Spread betting

Spread bets are fundamentally different from moneyline bets since the wager isn’t solely based on the outcome of a match. Instead, spread bets are dependent on the margin of a result. Since spread bets are based on margins, these allow players to bet on both sides and still have a chance to take home a decent payout. 

Let’s think of an example where the Rockets are given a -8.5 spread against the Falcons. If you’re going to bet on the Rockets, they would have to defeat the Falcons by a margin of 8.5 points or more. If you were to side with the Falcons and place a bet with them, they would have to either win the game or lose by a margin of 8 points or fewer for you to win.

Total Score Bets (Over/Under Betting)

Total score bets or over/under bets are settled on the aggregate score of a match. This form of betting considers the scores of both teams combined, and this number is pitted against a number predetermined by the sportsbook ahead of a game.

For example, let’s imagine that the oddsmakers set the aggregate at 43.5 in a match between the Rockets and the Falcons. If you expect a low-scoring game, you would bet on a total under that mark and get a payout if you are correct at full-time.

Parlays

A parlay bet is when you place a bet on several outcomes under a single wager. Instead of betting on each outcome individually, bringing multiple bets together allows you to play with better odds. Instead of placing individual bets on the Rockets winning against the Falcons and the Xavier Musketeers beating the Akron Zips, you can combine the two bets and bet a smaller amount for better odds. 

The caveat is that every leg of your bet has to win for your bet to be successful. However, if all your bets do come true, you will win a larger amount with a parlay than if you had only placed individual bets. 

Prop bets

Prop bets allow you to place bets on specific outcomes that can occur over the course of a match. While this outcome may not affect the final result, there are several betting opportunities within a game. Some examples of the most popular prop bets are how many yards a player may cover in football and how many goals a single player may score in soccer or hockey. 

Futures and outright bets

In an outright bet, you place a bet on who you think will take the championship at the end of the season. In futures bets, you can wager on outcomes like conference winners, MVPs, top scorers, and such.
